How big should a sports changing room be? It is the most common design question we get, and the answer starts with who is changing and what rules apply to your level. This guide covers the key numbers and shows real layouts at each size.
The Key Standards
- The FA requires a minimum of 18 square metres of changing space per team room at most levels of the National League System, plus separate officials’ facilities.
- Sport England guidance recommends around 0.9 square metres per player of bench space, with showers and toilets sized to squad numbers.
- Youth and recreational clubs are not bound by FA minimums and can use compact layouts.

Do Not Forget
- Officials’ rooms: allow roughly 3m x 2.4m with a shower and WC.
- Circulation and lobbies keep muddy boots out of clean areas.
- Boiler or plant space for hot water, typically a 300 litre cylinder per team room.
- Accessibility: DDA compliant access and an accessible WC where the public uses the building.
